Which schools have the most NCAA Men's Tournament Championships?

The 2025 men's NCAA Tournament tipped off on Thursday, and the 68-team field is already shrinking. By April 7, only one team will remain as the new NCAA basketball champion.

Before we see who claims the title, let’s take a look at the programs with the richest history of success.

Here are the men's college basketball teams with the most national championships.

The colleges that have won the most NCAA men's basketball titles.

San Francisco:2

The Dons won back-to-back national titles in 1955 and 1956, but they’ve only reached the NCAA Tournament twice in the past 40 years.

Oklahoma state:2

Oklahoma State was still known as Oklahoma A&M when it won its two championships in 1945 and 1946. Since then, the Cowboys have only made the NCAA Tournament once in the last eight seasons.

NC State:2

It’s been 42 years since the Wolfpack last won a championship under Jim Valvano, and that streak isn’t ending this season—they missed the NCAA Tournament. After the regular season, NC State parted ways with head coach Kevin Keatts and has reportedly reached a deal with Will Wade.

MICHIGAN state:2

The Spartans’ last championship came in 2000, just five seasons into Tom Izzo’s tenure. Now the winningest coach in Big Ten history, Izzo is still at the helm, leading Michigan State into the NCAA Tournament as a No. 2 seed with a shot at another deep run.
